Bhutan is an easy country to travel with family. Roads are quiet, the food is mild by default, and nothing about the itinerary requires an early alarm unless you want one. What makes or breaks a family trip here is pacing — so this route keeps drives short and leaves whole afternoons unscheduled.
We travel in a private vehicle sized to your group, and your guide carries the day. If someone is tired, we change the plan. Families with young children, elderly parents, or both, are the trips we run most often.
A sample route. We adjust it around your children’s ages, your dates and your pace.
We meet you at Paro airport and drive about an hour to Thimphu. Nothing scheduled for the rest of the day — altitude affects children differently and it is worth letting everyone settle.
The Buddha Dordenma looking down over the valley, the takin preserve (Bhutan’s oddest animal, and reliably a hit), and an archery ground where the children can try the national sport. Afternoon free.
A two-and-a-half hour drive with a proper stop at the Dochula Pass for hot tea and the 108 chortens. Punakha is lower and warmer, which most families are glad of. Afternoon at the dzong.
The suspension bridge, and an easy walk through rice terraces to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. Optional river rafting on the Mo Chhu for families with older children.
Back west to Paro with a stop wherever looks good. Afternoon in Paro town, which is small, walkable and easy with children.
The full climb is four to five hours round trip and not right for every family. The cafeteria viewpoint at the halfway mark is a reasonable target, and horses cover the first stretch. Families who would rather skip it entirely spend the day in the Paro valley instead — that is a perfectly good choice.
Breakfast and the short transfer to the airport.
Tell us your dates and the ages travelling, and we will build the itinerary around them.
